Thoughts On Cooking For My Family

I believe that food is more than just survival, it’s about comfort, love, and bringing people together.

Oct. 30, 2024 Spaghetti with Red Sauce, Caesar Salad

Michelle and John had planned a dinner out with friends this evening so it was just Apollo and I at home for dinner.  The day before when I was giving Apollo a ride to swim team practice I asked him what he would like me to cook.  He decided anything with pasta.

Good idea.  I had a container of marinara sauce in my freezer I’ve been wanting to use.  I bought a pound of hamburger, cooked it with onions and garlic, then dumped in the frozen marinara sauce.  Oh, also mushrooms.  It was really good.

I confess, I cheated on the Caeser Salad again this time.  I bought already washed and chopped lettuce and Ceaser salad dressing from Whole Foods salad bar.  Also store made croutons.  Very easy and tasty too.

We had a nice dinner together.  We talked about short stories he’s read and enjoyed.  Then he informed me that they had no candy to give out for Halloween!  Oh no!!  We drove up to Giant to get some.  Sold out, no bags of mini candies left.  We drove over to Target.  There wasn’t much left there either but we were able to get some.  Whew!  I told him that if we couldn’t find any we would have to turn out all the lights and pretend we weren’t home.  Halloween has always been such a fun evening in the past.  It would be tragic if we had no candy to give out.

In the past we would build a fire in the fire pit in the front yard, set up chairs all around, sit out with big bowls of chili and a glass of wine to enjoy the children coming by in all their creative costumes.  The grown ups would enjoy the party at home with the kids made the rounds of the neighborhood.

Not so this year.  Michelle was just getting home from work, Apollo was at swim team practice until 7:00, John had a zoom meeting at 5:30.  At 15 and over 6 feet tall, Apollo is too old to trick or treat.  I was so sad that we no longer have little kids at home, and the evening with family was chaotic.  So I just stayed home and did not participate.
